Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki led Serbia take lead against Belgium – Davis Cup 2013
Serbian stars, Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki, prevailed over their opponents to take a 2-0 lead against Belgium at the Davis Cup 2013.
The world number one, Djokovic, breezed past Germany’s Olivier Rochus, in one hour and 39 minutes. After stealing the spotlight, Djokovic improved to 3-3 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the veteran.
The Serbian top ranked star was quoted in a post match press conference:
“The serve was incredible and I think that helped me to get the match done in straight sets which was important. It wasn’t easy playing on clay after a long time indoors and coming from Australia quite late. At the start, I had trouble with movement and getting used to the conditions but I managed to play my best tennis when I needed to.”
Djokovic assertively entered the Spiroudome de Charleroi in Belgium. He swiftly kept his entire serves with poise and after getting the breakthrough in the sixth game, the Serb clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
The 25-year-old lifted his game in the proceeding set. After the Belgian kept his serve in the third game, Djokovic unleashed barrage of winners and reeled off proceeding five games. As a result, the Serbian star clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
The Serbian ace maintained his intensity in the third set of this indoor clay court event. He broke his opponent’s serve twice and jumped to a 5-1 lead. Djokovic kept his serve once again and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to two.
Earlier that day, Troicki made an epic comeback from two sets down to outclass David Goffin. As a result, he not only avenged his loss at the Winston Salem Open last season but also levelled the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against the 22-year-old. With this victory, Serbia took an early lead against the host nation.
Djokovic will take on David Goffin in the reverse singles rubber on Sunday while Troicki will deal with German veteran.
