Novak Djokovic backs Andy Murray for Britain’s Sports Personality of the Year award – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, thinks that Great Britain’s best tennis player of the last seven decades, Andy Murray, should win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for 2012.
Murray captured US Open crown in September this year to become his country’s first Grand Slam champion in the last 76 years and it was Djokovic, whom he defeated in the title match.
Djokovic stated in a recent interview, “Andy had a fantastic year. To win his first Grand Slam title, in New York, and to win the Olympic Games which only come around every four years - it could barely be more satisfying for him.”
One month before that, the British number one stunned one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Roger Federer, in straight sets to grab Gold Medal at the London Olympics. It was a treat for British tennis fans, as that win of Murray came at their own
homeland and that too after a gap of more than 100 years.
The Serbian added, “Winning in London in front of his home crowd after reaching the final of Wimbledon a few weeks earlier - he has been playing the tennis of his life.”
Murray was in tears at the same place just a month prior to that, when he lost to Federer in the final of Wimbledon. That was the 25-year-old’s fourth straight loss in a Grand Slam final.
Though, the British star became his country’s first player to reach the second Sunday at the All England Club for the first time in the last 74 years but he could not break the 76 year drought of a local champion.

With all these achievements in the recently finished season, 2012 was by far Murray’s most successful year as a professional tennis player so far. Djokovic even wishes to vote for the London resident himself.
The 5-time Grand Slam winner said, “Vote for Andy Murray for BBC Sports Personality, I only wish I could vote myself.”
Many of the tennis legends and experts have already predicted that Murray would win a couple of Grand Slams in 2013.
