Novak Djokovic bashes critics for accusing him of playing Paris for bonus – Tennis News
Reigning World No.1, Novak Djokovic, has missed the last two Master tournaments due to chronic back injury but his non-participation in major events have allowed his critics to transform his injury news in monetary terms. Djokovic was accused of playing the Paris tournament and missing the last two Master events because of bonus money.
He suffered a severe back injury while contesting a match in Davis Cup and in the after-match press conference he said “If I know that I'm physically good enough, in good condition to be competing, I will compete. If I don't, I will not compete. It's as simple as that.''
Djokovic would have lost his entire share from ATP’s bonus pool if he had not participated in Paris and hence critics connected his participation to the bonus money that is completely denied by the World No.1 who thinks it to be a rubbish claim.
Talking to the media he bashed the innovator of this phenomena and said “It was really somehow funny for me to see how people are coming up with that story. I even heard that I would get on the court and play a game just to get this money. I mean, this is ridiculous. I want to play well here. I want to get as far as possible, and then London (for next week's tour finals), which is the most important tournament in this part of the year for all of us.''
Players are being regularly struck with several controversies. Recently it was World No.2, Rafael Nadal, who was accused of snubbing Queen’s tournament for $750K but he clearly refused all the claims and explained his point of view. He snubbed Queen’s for Halle because of tax purposes and no other reason according to him.
Serbian was operated twice on his shoulder and things were not looking so good when he was knocked-out of Basel in the fourth round as well. There was doubt over his participation in Paris tournament but he made it clear in his last interview that he will take part in that tournament.
Djokovic has been in supreme form throughout this year and had just lost four cumulative matches in kinds of tournament he played. He has won three of four major titles including Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open and has also clinched five Master titles as well this year. It has been one of the most successful year in his career and he looks ahead to compile further glorious victories in his terrific era.
