Novak Djokovic believes Milos Raonic can enter top 10 – Tennis News
World number one, Novak Djokovic, thinks that Canada’s rising star, Milos Raonic, has the potential to break into the top 10.
The right-hander stretched the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, to three sets in the third round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Novak Djokovic, who was sitting in the sidelines during the contest between Raonic and Federer, said the 6ft 5in tall has the tendency to join the elites of tennis. The Serbian commented, “We all expected Milos to serve the way
he serves. He's always serving really strong and using that as a great weapon. It was a close match.”
The Serbian added, “Milos has a bright future in front of him. He's a very nice man in the first place, and somebody that you could feel that is very committed to the game. He's very professional. He understands the match play,
what he needs to do in important moments. That's going to be crucial for him to overcome those challenges in the future. But he has potential to be Top 10.”
Federer also praised Raonic and said he was impressed by the Canadian sensation.
The 21-year-old, Raonic, has come as a storm in the world of tennis and made a positive impact on everyone with the class of his game.
Raonic received the 2011 ATP Newcomer of the Year award. He started last season ranked 156th in the world. It all started for the Canadian at previous year’s SAP Open, when he upset the then world number nine Fernando
Verdasco in the final to clinch title.
In the very next week, Raonic made it clear that his performance in San Jose was not a fluke as he surprised Verdasco, Radek Stepanek and Mardy Fish on his road to the final at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Raonic lost
a three set thriller at the hands of Andy Roddick in the title match. At the end of the season, the Canadian had jumped to 31st spot in the South African Airways ATP Rankings.
Raonic has made an even better start in 2012. The Canadian has won 16 out of the 19 matches so far in this season. The Ontario, Canada resident upset Nicolas Almagro and Janko Tipsarevic in the semi-final and final respectively
at the Aircel Chennai Open. Raonic grabbed his second title by beating Uzbek, Denis Istomin, in the SAP Open final.
The Canadian rose to 24th spot in the ATP Rankings last month.
