Novak Djokovic blasts through Nicolas Mahut to reach the fourth round – Australian Open 2012
Mighty Serbian wind kept blowing at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday afternoon, as the world number one, Novak Djokovic, outmuscled the French veteran, Nicolas Mahut, in the third round of the Australian Open. The top seed Serb
faced absolutely no difficulty in dumping the 81st ranked Frenchman in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, to force his way into the final-16 of the Grand Slam event in Melbourne, Australia.
The competition was completely owned by Djokovic, who merely took 74 minutes to wrap up the proceedings in the most authoritative manner. The 24-year-old defending champion bettered his opponent in every segment of the game and
gave no opportunities to Mahut to have an impact on the game. The Frenchman coughed a total of 26 unforced errors in the match, including five double faults and it all proved too taxing for him in the end.
Djokovic cashed in eight out of 13 break points in the contest, with his opponent utterly failing to register a single serve break in the entire matchup. Mahut proved to be an absolute mismatch for the world number one and was
seen struggling at every moment of the match. Djokovic hammered 31 winners, while Mahut could secure a mere 12 to finish on the losing side.
The top seed took reins of the match right from the opening game and went on for a six-game killing spree before Mahut could get his eye in the contest. Djokovic nailed three successive break points to rocket away to 6-0 in just
24 minutes of play. The mighty Serb continued with his demolition job in the following set and consecutive serve breaks in fourth and sixth games left him serving for the set at 5-1. He served out of the second set with a breadstick, 6-1, getting 2-0 in the
match in 53 minutes of play.
The third was no different to the Frenchman, who kept struggling with his bleak game play to sink further in the match. Djokovic ignited the set with two break points, rocketing away to 4-0 lead and then stung another one in the
seventh game to close out victory at 6-1.
