Novak Djokovic bulldozes Bernard Tomic in the second round – Rogers Cup 2012
Top seed, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, took a good start in Toronto, as he thrashed Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of Rogers Cup on Wednesday. The Serbian needed only an hour and
11 minutes to topple his opponent.
Djokovic and Tomic started the contest by holding their serve in the opening four games of the match to equalise the score at 2-2. The Serbian raised the level of his game after that, clinching four in a row to capture it 6-2.
Ranked second in the world, Djokovic hit a couple of aces and 61 percent of the first deliveries, bagging 13 of the 19 points on them. The Serbian star claimed most of the points on replies to his opponent’s serves, securing 11
of the 22 and seven of the 12 points on them. The 25-year-old put away all the six break threats he came across and availed two of the six chances he created in the opener.
Second set was more competitive than the first, as none of the two players managed to break serve in the first seven games and took the score to 4-3 in favour of Djokovic. The Serbian player nailed a breakthrough in the eighth
and did not lose even a single point on his following serve, closing it 6-3.
The 6ft 2in tall drastically improved his serve in the second set, banging in five aces and not committing any double fault. The Monte-Carlo, Monaco resident maintained a first delivery percentage of 74 and did well to convert
16 of the 17 of them into points.
Just three days back, Djokovic lost to Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in the Bronze Medal match at the London Olympics on Sunday. Tennis event of Olympic Games was held on the grass courts of the All England Tennis Club.
At the end of the match, Djokovic said, “For the first match it was a decent performance. Obviously at the start we played very long opening four games, and I was struggling to find the rhythm… It’s totally different conditions,
time zone, ball bounce, everything.”
The Serbian added, “But I love playing on hard court. It’s my favourite surface. Obviously when I needed to play well and be patient, I’ve done that really well today. Serve was working really good, so that’s a positive.”
Djokovic is drawn to play USA’s Sam Querrey in the round of 16. Querrey upset the 13th seed, Kei Nishikori of Japan, in the second round.
