Novak Djokovic cruises past Bobby Reynolds to enter round three – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Top seed, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, dumped the American qualifier, Bobby Reynolds, with a breadstick at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Thursday.
He recorded a 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-1 win over the qualifier to power into the third round at this Major grass court event held in London, United Kingdom.
The world number one, Djokovic, unleashed his true colours after entering the Centre Court and outclassed Reynolds with ease. With this victory, the Serb edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against Reynolds and stayed on track to capture his
second Wimbledon crown.
The Serbian ace commented in a post match press conference after earning the limelight, “I think the fact that the top players lost in the last few days gives enough reason for all of us to not underestimate any opponent and not look that far. So we got
to take it step by step. It's sport, you know. I was serving well throughout the whole match. Still haven't dropped my serve, which is an encouraging fact. Credit to my opponent today for playing well when he was break points down. But I had a poor realisation
of my break point opportunities today. Hopefully that's going to get better in the next matches. But overall performance was good.”
In the opening set both contestants displayed brilliant tennis. Djokovic spilled fewer unforced errors and amazingly fired 16 winners including six aces. He failed to get a breakthrough but went berserk in the tie-breaker. The Serb cruised to a 5-0 lead
before closing out the opener with a 7-6(2) win.
The Belgrade native kept momentum sailing in the following set. He got the coveted break in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. Djokovic held his remaining serves with poise and availed another break chance in the last game to clinch the set with a
6-3 score line. He was never challenged with any breakpoint and converted two out of nine break chances to his advantage.
The 26-year-old’s skills were fully polished in the third set. He drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. After the world number 156 held his serve in the fourth game, Djokovic stroke out the proceeding three games and pocketed
the set with a breadstick.
Up next for Djokovic is the winner of the match between 28th seeded Jeremy Chardy and the German qualifier, Jan-Lennard Struff.
