Novak Djokovic crushes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach semis – London Olympics 2012
Second seed, Novak Djokovic, devastated the French number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, with a breadstick at the London Olympics 2012 on Thursday. He nudged up a 6-1, 7-5 victory against the fifth seed to cruise into the final four at Games of the x*x Olympiad taking place in Wimbledon, London.
The former world number one, Djokovic shows flawless performance to tumble the French in their 13th meeting at this major sports tournament held after every four years. After prevailing throughout the 80-minute venture, the Serb not only edged in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 7-6 against Tsonga but also booked a place in the semi-finals.
The ecstatic Serb was quoted in a post match courtside interview:
“I’m very satisfied with my game today. I was very sharp, very aggressive from the start. I’m really satisfied that I managed to find a way to play well.”
“Tsonga is very powerful from the baseline,” Djokovic said about Tsonga. “So, for me, the right thing to do today was to use my serve as efficiently as possible in these windy, tough conditions.”
Djokovic stepped on the Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in high spirits. He drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead before the French could come on the score sheet. The Serb maintained his intensity and stroke out the last three games, eventually sealing the opener with a breadstick in 32 minutes.
The Serbian ace lost his track towards the second set and suffered the initial blow in the second game to fall at 0-3. However, he not only recovered in the fifth game but got the breakthrough in 11th game, eventually clicking the set with a 7-5 win.
Overall, the Serb ruled throughout the battle. He converted four out of 13 break opportunities to his advantage and took full advantage of Tsonga’s 19 unforced errors.
Up next for Djokovic is the third seed Andy Murray who got the better of Spain’s Nicolas Almagro with a breadstick to set up this duel.
"[Murray] has been playing better than ever on grass courts," the Serb commented about his next match-up against Wimbledon runner-up. "I will have to be at the top of my game.”
The British number one recorded a fascinating 6-4, 6-1 success against the 11th seeded Almagro in 59 minutes. He hammered nine aces and 16 winners to capture the first set in 34 minutes.
