Novak Djokovic defeats Andy Murray to claim Australian Open title
In an astounding display of dominance, Serbia’s third seed, Novak Djokovic defeated Britain's Andy Murray to claim the 2011 Australian Open men's singles title. Winning in straight sets, Djokovic played impressively to claim the victory. A final scoreline of 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3 is truly a testament to the excellence of the Serb's game.
The match started on level terms, with the first set being a long and hard fought one. Both players played an intense game, utilizing their devastating forehands well. After several long exchanges, the score stood at 4-5 on Murray's serve. It was here that Djokovic began to dominate, with Murray starting to commit errors. At the end, a forehand error handed Djokovic the set and he went up 1-0.
The second set had Djokovic written all over it as he broke his opponent’s serve twice and raced to 5-0. Murray, then regained his footing and fought back to 5-2, but Djokovic was on a rampage, as he won the set 6-2 on his serve.
The third set was closer than the second set, with Murray fighting tooth and nail to get back into the match. He broke in the first game, and then capitalized on the advantage. However, it was of no good, as Djokovic broke back twice in rapid succession to take the set, the match and the championship.
It was a battle for succession to the crown of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and there could not have been two worthier challengers. Unfortunately, Murray failed to turn up with his best game. Nonetheless, there were many memorable moments during the match, as the Briton gave his all to make a comeback. Djokovic’s impressive play deserves due recognition, as he defeated Murray in the same manner as he defeated Roger Federer in the semi-finals. Dominance from the start and excellent aggression by the Serb provided immense entertainment to tennis fans throughout the world.
After the match, Djokovic looked jubilant, as it was expected. Taking off his shirt, shoes and even his socks, he distributed all his possessions to the crowd. Nonetheless, it was a great victory and a unique ending to a tournament that we have all been blessed to watch.
