Novak Djokovic destroys Conor Niland in opening round – US Open 2011
Serbian juggernaut Novak Djokovic got off to a superb start in the 2011 US Open as he blasted past Irish qualifier Conor Niland. Set at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Djokovic took less than an hour as he closed a 6-0, 5-1 retirement
victory over the flabbergasted Irish.
Winning the toss, Djokovic opened serve and from the get go started his assault on the much lower ranked Irish. Losing no points in the opener, the Serbian juggernaut raced to put himself on the scoreboard as he went one up in
the game score. Continuing his dominance over Niland, Djokovic broke the Irish in the second game allowing only one point to Niland. With successful holds of his own serves and a breakpoint later, Djoker had extended his lead to a massive five games to none
in only sixteen minutes. Serving in the sixth game, Niland was able to match Djoker’s points only once taking the score to 30-30 before the Serb stepped on the gas as he forced back-to-back errors and secured a bagel win in the first set.
Taking a total of little over twenty minutes, Djokovic had closed out the first set with two aces , zero double faults and two to eleven unforced errors securing a 6-0 victory and a lead in the set score.
Down and definitely out, Niland failed to put up any defence in the second set as the Serb continued his merciless ascent. Although Niland managed to hold his first service game of the match and match 1-1 on the scoreboard, this
was the last time he ever saw himself there for the next thirty minutes. Djokovic was able to extend his lead to five games to one only twenty two minutes into the second set before the furious Irish retired from the match citing an injury. Niland definitely
needed his pot of gold if he had any hopes of matching the unstoppable Serb.
Djokovic now moves on ahead to play either Spaniard Pere Riba or Argentine Carlos Berlocq in the second round.
