Novak Djokovic destroys David Ferrer; moves into the semi-final of the Mutua Madrid Open
World number two Novak Djokovic recovered from a second-set hiccup 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to oust David Ferrer of Spain in the quarterfinal of Mutua Madrid Open. The Serbian required 147 minutes to defeat the home favourite, who was a runner-up
in consecutive recent tournaments at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters and Barcelona Open. The Serbian pro has extended his remarkable match winning streak to 30 matches for his 2011 campaign and has set up a last-four clash with Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.
In the windy conditions, the Serbian seemed to fight with his form in the beginning stages of the contest, with Spaniard breaking in the second game of the match. Djokovic’s victory was all the more exciting for the way he broke
back from the downfall of dropping his serve to lose the second set, before finally marching towards the semifinal. Critical break for the Serbian came in the fifth game of the deciding set where he never looked like squandering and broke the nervous Spaniard
to close out the match in style.
World number two kicked off the match on a bad note as he lost his serve in the second game, allowing his opponent to take the lead 4-0. However, the 23-year-old struggled hard and managed to break back to level things up till
4-4, before the Spaniard stumbled in the ninth game to allow Djokovic to serve out the first set 6-4. In the second set the Serbian started off great and clinched a quick lead 2-0, before losing his serve in the fourth game, followed by a tenth game to let
the Spaniard tick the lead on even terms 4-6. However the final set was totally a one-sided affair, where the Spaniard lost his groove and surrendered in front of his solid ground strokes. Ferrer lost the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 score which ended in two
hours and twenty seven minutes of sheer contest.
Djokovic will meet Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil in the semi final of tournament. Both players will do the battle for the second time in their careers during the semi-final action at the Madrid Masters on Saturday. Their head-to-head
series currently stands at 1-0 in Djokovic’s favour. Bellucci who ended the inspiring run of world number four Andy Murray and world number seven Tomas Berdych is looking pretty confident. Although Serbian is undefeated to date, but Bellucci exhibits no signs
of fear saying, “I think I can beat any player”. Bellucci’s previous wins over top 10 players has given him plenty confidence for his semi-final match.
