Novak Djokovic destroys Rafael Nadal; clinches maiden title here – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Serbian juggernaut Novak Djokovic destroyed defending champion and soon-to-be former world number one Rafael Nadal in the title match at 2011 Wimbledon Championships on Sunday, 3rd July in London, England to lift his
first Wimbledon trophy.
The Serb took nearly two hours and forty minutes to secure a 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over the Spaniard.
As the two titans took to the courts, Djokovic opened serve and comfortably put himself on the scoreboard, followed closely by Rafa. As expected the match progressed on even footing with neither playing coming even close to breaking
the other. Leading the set 5-4, Djokovic bounced back from 0-30 to take the score to 40-30, before forcing an into-the-net shot from Nadal to clinch the first set 6-4.
Taking forty one minutes in the opener, the Serb hit nine winners and struck three aces as he registered an amazing 82 percent win on first serve and a 67 percent win on second serve to go one up in the set score.
Leading the set score 1-0, Djokovic started the second set on a strong note as he broke Rafa in the second game at 15-40, before holding his own serve to lead the set 3-0. After a successful hold of serve from both players, Djokovic
once more forced errors from Rafa as he converted another breakpoint opportunity to his advantage going 5-1 in the lead. Losing not a single point, Djokovic started the seventh game with an ace before hitting three straight winners to serve out the set at
5-1, clinching a breadstick win over the defending champion.
The Serb improved his first serve win to 88 percent as Rafa dropped to a disappointing 46 percent. Hitting thirteen winners and smacking four aces, Djoker took thirty three minutes to wrap up the second set and lead the match two
sets to love.
Down but not out, Rafa changed the course of events in the third set as he broke Djokovic in the second game and then consolidated his stand with a successful service game to secure an early 3-0 lead. Serving at 4-1 a costly double
fault from Djokovic on Nadal’s advantage at deuce gave Rafa another break as he extended his lead to 5-1. Returning the favour, Rafa served out the set at 5-1 without losing a single point to clinch a 6-1 win and reduce the set deficit to 1-2.
Surviving the third set lapse, Djoker broke early to take a 2-0 lead. However, breaking back in the third game while holding his own in the fourth, Rafa brought the score on even terms with two games each. Winning on his serve
at 4-3, Djokovic extended his lead to 5-3 in the eighth game as he capitalised on Rafa’s double fault and many unforced errors converting another breakpoint opportunity to his advantage.  A tense ninth game followed as Rafa matched blow for blow. However,
standing at 30 – all, Djokovic hit a winner down the line before clinching the championship point off a long forehand from Rafa.
With this win, Djokovic not only becomes the first Serb ever to lift the Wimbledon Championships trophy but also gets 2000 ranking points that will boost his soon-to-be acquired world number one ranking come Monday, 4th
July.
