Novak Djokovic destroys Roger Federer to reach the final – Mubadala World Tennis Championship 2011
World number one, Novak Djokovic, displayed flawless performance to dismiss the Swiss Master, Roger Federer, with a breadstick at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship 2011 on Friday. He quickly jolted down a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the 16-times Grand
Slam title winner and secured a title-round spot at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Top seeded Serb flashed past Federer, ranked 3rd in the South African Airway ATP World Tour Rankings, in under an hour on their 25th meeting to reach the final round at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis
Complex at Zayed Sports City. The 24-year-old Serb lost his last two matches at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. However, he regained confidence after winning his debut match in this event (rallying past French number two, Gael Monfils in the
quarter-finals) and confidently stepped on the Arabian hard courts.
The Serbian number got into the savage mode once the scores were levelled at 2-2 with Federer. He hammered ferocious winners and wiped out last four games in a row, sealing the opener with a 6-2 victory.
Djokovic kept momentum rolling in the second set and continued bagging the games on regularity. He went to a five games killing spree before the former world number one, Federer, could hold on. The Serb kept his serve in the seventh game and pocketed
a breadstick in under half an hour.
“That was definitely an incredible performance,” a pleased Djokovic said afterwards. “I will get a lot of confidence if I continue playing like that.”
Djokovic enjoyed a successful 2011 season with an impressive 42 match winning streak. Federer broke his streak in the semi-finals of the Roland Garros but the Serb bounced again to win the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open, after defeating the
Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal in the final rounds on both occasions. His exceptional form led him grab ten titles this season, including three Grand Slams and six ATP Masters 1000 events. Mustering his season further, the Serb was standing at number three
in the ATP rankings at the beginning of the year but rocketed away to the top spot in July.
Next challenge for the Serb is the fourth seeded Spaniard, David Ferrer, who stunned the world number two, Nadal, in straight sets to set-up this clash. Djokovic lost to Ferrer in London last month and he needs to maintain his intensity against the
world number five in the next matchup. Although the Serbian youngster leads the head-to-head series against Ferrer by 6-5, Djokovic should remain focused throughout the match and don’t play casually.
The Swiss ace, on the other side, was on an incredible seventeen match winning streak. He started his season after clinching title at the Doha ATP event but his form dipped and he was ousted by Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal in the finals or semi-finals
of all major events including the Grand Slams. Federer, however, perfected his ways in September and after bagging his David Cup matches, the Swiss clinched three titles. He conquered his home soil tournament, Swiss Indoors Basel, before getting the spotlight
at the Paris Masters 1000 event. The third seed then outclassed everyone in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals before entering this exhibition event. His age might be a factor against losing to Djokovic but the Swiss number one is eyeing for the number one
spot in 2012.
