Novak Djokovic determined to repeat his feats in 2012 ATP season – Tennis Special
Ending the 2011 ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season in the most authoritative manner, the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, is keen to take off the next year with all his guns blazing. The Serb was bestowed with the prestigious World Champion title last week by ITF (International Tennis Federation), honouring his remarkable achievements in the year 2011, which he believes that they were only the beginning.
Finishing the current season with a 70-6 winning record, Djokovic has been in the form of his life throughout the year, forcing his way all the way to the top of the South African Airways ATP World Rankings. The dominant Serb outplayed a number of top class contestants to bag a total of 10 ATP championship titles, including three of the all-prestigious Grand Slam tournaments, in the current to take the Player of the Year award from ATP.
After a lay-off of two weeks, the world number one has set his eyes upon an impactful start to the 2012 ATP season. The Serbian believes that he will roll over his winning impetus in the next season as well and will strengthen his position on the top of the men’s rankings by bagging some early championship titles.
“I need to believe in my qualities, in my abilities. I need to believe I can repeat this year again. Of course it's going to be an incredible and a difficult task to achieve, but you never know. Nothing is really impossible,” told Djokovic to the reporters in Abu Dhabi.
The top ranked Serb expressed that he will stick to his current playing tactics and will practice harder to maintain his physical fitness for playing the sport. Djokovic has been struggling from minor lower back and shoulder injuries towards the end of the season, resulting him a couple of losses to break his winning momentum.
“I am sticking with the same regime, and my diet and the same way of practicing," Djokovic said. "Nothing has changed.
The mighty Serb took off the 2011 season as the world number three in men’s rankings but his consistent performances with the racquet propelled him all the way to the top in six month’s time. Djokovic had one Grand Slam title before beginning the best season of his life so far and went on to capture three Major trophies to extend his count to four.
Djokovic outplayed the then fifth ranked Briton, Andy Murray, in the final of the Australian Open to take the first Grand Slam of the year 2011 in an assertive fashion. Once getting into his winning groove, the Serbian blazed his way through all the tournaments he played to make an amazing 42-match winning streak, levelling the record with the legendary John McEnroe. Former world number one, Roger Federer, was the one who broke his dream run in the final of the Roland Garros, the only Grand Slam tournament of the year which wasn’t pocketed by Djokovic. The world number one furthered bagged the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open to be hailed as the most successful player of the year.
Djokovic wasn’t successful at the circuit ending Grand Finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, something not desirable by the mighty Serb. However, he is fully confident that the coming season will bring in even more titles for him. With the two former world number ones, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal eyeing to reclaim the top spot from Djokovic, and the world number four aiming for an improvement in his ratings, it will be a real tough task for the Serbian to hold the top position. His physical fitness is the only vital factor which might let his opponents take the better of him but otherwise, Djokovic will certainly carry on his sequel of wins in the next season
