Novak Djokovic devotes the stupendous victory at ATP Tour Finals to his father – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, dethroned the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, at the final of the Barclays Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Finals on Monday. He defeated the 31-year-old Swiss in straight
sets 7-6(6), 7-5 to claim the maiden season-end title of his career. It will also help the Serb superstar to cement his position at the top of world rankings as he ends the second successive season as the number one player.
It was a stupendous victory for someone who has struggled quite a lot compared to his previous season where he was absolutely invincible. He didn’t lose a single match throughout the contest; defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Andy Murray
and Tomas Berdych in the Round Robin matches. He marched on to trash the Argentine bronze medallist, Juan martin Del Potro, in the semi-finals; rallied a set down to beat the 1.98 meters tall lad.
In the end, it was none other than the crowd favourite, Roger Federer, who stood firm in his way and the title but he surpassed all the hurdles and made sure that he returned back home with a glorious trophy in his hand that will
help his father to rehabilitate maybe. He dedicated his win to his dad who is fighting for his life in the hospital at Belgrade, Serbia.
Commenting about that, Djokovic said, “Having my father fighting for his health gave me extra strength that I wanted to play for him in a way. That's one of the reasons I really gave it my all every match, especially tonight. This
was a title for him. He's much better now. I don't want people to start talking about my father's health.”
He further added, “We don’t know what tomorrow brings. Now he's much better and he's recovering. He's still in intensive care. I'm going to visit him tomorrow and see how it goes and try to bring a trophy with me and at least make
him smile.”
Djokovic has registered a record of 75-12 this season that is slightly worse than his last year’s achievement which witnessed 78 victories and just seven losses altogether. Djokovic has won Australian Open, Sony Ericsson Open,
Rogers Cup, China Open, Shanghai Masters and the year-end trophy. Six titles triumphs were coupled with five final losses that could have taken his tally to 11 if he had managed to squeeze one more win. However, it has been another successful season for the
25-year-old Serb and probably the beginning of the new era for him.
