Novak Djokovic disposes of Marin Cilic to cruise into the quarters – Rogers Cup 2011
Serbian wind kept blowing in its full flow at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, as the world number one, Novak Djokovic, outclassed Marin Cilic of Croatia in the third round of Rogers Cup on Thursday afternoon.
Stretching his record to an unbelievable 50-1 in the running year, Djokovic had no real worry in disposing of Croatia’s number one tennis player in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, to make it to the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
Striving to bag his ninth championship title of the year, Djokovic once again annihilated the Croat competitor to move into the round of eight of Montreal Masters. Cilic posed some resistance in the opening set to stretch it to
a total of 12 games but proved an easy task for the world number one in the second set of the match. Djokovic was greatly assisted by the errant stroke play of his opponent, who conceded a number of unforced errors to award some easy points to the tough top
seed.
“There was a lot of wind. It wasn’t a beautiful match to play or watch, but I guess in the right moments I kept the ball in the court to make my opponent make unforced errors,” told Djokovic to the press reporters, “I was just
more patient and played well, so I guess that’s the positive.”
The top seed reeled off 19 out of 24 first serve points in the opener and registered just one serve break to close the first set at 7-5. Once getting into this winning impetus, the Serb never looked back at his opponent and nailed
an early break point to rocket away to 4-1 lead in the second set. His third break point conversion came in the eighth game of the set, closing out victory for him at 6-2.
Almost unbeaten this year, the top seeded Serbian appeared unplayable in the contest and registered his 26th straight win on the hard courts. The last time he played on Cilic was in the Round Robin of the 2010 edition
of Fed Cup, where the Serb stood victorious in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 and the Serb now leads the all-time head-to-head series against him by 6-0.
Djokovic will take on the fifth seeded French competitor, Gael Monfils, in his next encounter to fight for a place in his tenth straight semi-final of the running ATP season.
