Novak Djokovic downs Richard Gasquet to clinch title – Rogers Cup 2012
World number two, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, successfully defended his title in Toronto, as he defeated the 14th seeded Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, in the Rogers Cup final on Sunday.
The top seed did not provide any chance to Gasquet, allowing the French player to win just five games in the entire encounter and beating him in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Djokovic and Gasquet started steadily, holding their serve in the opening seven games to take the score to 4-3 in the favour of the former. The Serbian suddenly started to play flawlessly at that moment, as he did not lose even
a single point in the following two games and sealed it 6-3.
The 25-year-old, Djokovic, did not allow the Frenchman to settle down in the second set, as he nailed a break in the very first game of the second set and consolidated on it to go up 2-0. The Serbian hit another blow to Gasquet
in the seventh and made the most of his double advantage to capture it 6-2.
It took Djokovic just an hour and two minutes to complete victory over his French rival.
The Serbian star, who failed to reach the podium at London Olympics, has won the Rogers Cup title for the third time in his career. The Belgrade, Serbia resident had also grabbed the title here in 2007 in addition to his last year’s
win.
Djokovic said during the post match press conference, “It's a big tournament, one of the biggest we have in tennis. I'm very happy to be in this position. I truly did not expect myself to win this tournament after the emotional
losses in the Olympic Games. I really took it hard. I tried to bounce back and recover; I've done great, I have to say.”
He added, “I'm not one of the biggest servers in the game, that's for sure, but I always try to focus on the second shot after the serve. I’ve been working on the efficiency of my first and second serve, but also trying to be aggressive
in the first ball.”
This was Djokovic’s 31st title overall and first since he won the Sony Ericsson Open in March.
