Novak Djokovic downs Viktor Troicki to move into the quarterfinals of BNP Paribas Open
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic defeated compatriot Viktor Troicki easily to get into the quarterfinals of the main draw at the BNP Paribas Open 2011.
Hoping to extend his twelve match winning streak in the season so far, Djokovic took only one hour and six minutes to overcome the sixteenth seeded Troicki in two straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
It was Djokovic’s eighth victory against his country fellow since the pair had met already at seven previous occasions on tour making their official head to head 8-1 in Djokovic’s favour. The pair’s last meeting came only two months
ago when the two met for their third round match at the Australian Open. Djokovic emerged successful in a straight set 6-2 due to his opponent’s retirement from the match due to injury.
Both players have enjoyed top form recently though Djokovic won the match, as he did not squander any opportunity during the match. The 25 year old Troicki appeared completely out of form. He did not show the class which he displayed
in the third round, ejecting Michael Llodra out of the tournament.
The 23-year-old was full of enthusiasm in winning his serve points. Djokovic won 10 out of 13 first serve points while his opponent had a meager 36 per cent winning rate. Troicki was bestowed with 3 break chances in the match though
he failed to convert any of them while Djokovic saved 100 percent break points. The first set turned out to be a bagel win for Djokovic who defeated Troicki reeling six straight games.
Analyzing Djokovic’s plan of action, Troicki rectified his imperfections and fought back by landing in two aces. As far as judging the serve quality of both contestants was concerned, it was held that Djokovic had a clear edge
over the compatriot again. The 23-year-old had an admirable conversion rate of first serves into points as he got 70 per cent in the second set while Troicki lagged far behind him with a meager 53. Winning on serve gave him the dominance he needed to wrap
up a straight sets victory. Djokovic recorded a 6-1 win in the second set.
With this win, Djokovic has improved his year-to-date win/loss record to 13-0. He now moves on ahead to face Richard Gasquet of France, an eighteenth seed here in the tournament. This is going to be their fifth meeting, having
met already at four previous occasions on tour. Djokovic leads their head-to-head record by 3-1.
