Novak Djokovic finally claims the year-ending world number one spot – Tennis News
Serbian juggernaut, Novak Djokovic, has been labouring extremely hard to reclaim his lost world number one spot in the ATP rankings since the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, snatched it earlier this summer. He has eventually claimed
the year-ending world number one spot for the second successive year.
Djokovic was aiming to clinch the top rank after bagging the Paris Masters event but his task was made easier by Federer himself. The Swiss Maestro lost in the final of Swiss Indoors Basel, failing to retain the ranking points
from the tournament which he has been sustaining for the last two years. Things turned even better for Djokovic when Federer announced his withdrawal from the last ATP Masters Series 1000 event in Paris. The 31-year-old Swiss has cited that he is suffering
from sheer fatigue and wants a short lay-off before featuring the circuit-ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, in London. Federer was the defending champion at Paris Masters and his withdrawal from this year’s edition has caused further
deduction in his ranking points.
On the other side, Djokovic is playing the coveted tournament in Paris and his participation has already guaranteed him the year-ending world number one spot. He will claim the top spot in the South African Airways ATP World Tour
Rankings on 5th of November. Federer being unable to sustain the ranking points from his title defence has gifted the privilege to the Serbian tennis ace, who has been trying desperately to accomplish this feat in the last few months.
So it can be rightly said that it is not Djokovic who has earned the world number one mark but it is Federer who propelled the Serbian to the most elite rank in the men’s tennis. Federer’s aging factor has clearly played its part
this week and his withdrawal from crucial tournaments due to fatigue shows that the Swiss Maestro does not possess his vintage stamina anymore. He use to be the fittest and tireless professional on the ATP World Tour but seems to have lost some of his steam
after crossing the 30-year mark this season.
