Novak Djokovic flashes past Paolo Lorenzi in the opening round – US Open 2012
Second seed, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, stayed on the right track to defend his title after slaughtering the Italian challenger, Paolo Lorenzi, with double breadsticks at the US Open 2012 on Tuesday. He jolted down a 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 victory against the Italian
to power into the second round at this major hard court event held in Corona Park, New York City.
The underdog made a stunning start as he drew the first blood in the opening game. However, Djokovic went on a 12-game killing spree and eventually carved out the victory in straight sets. As a result, he improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the 30-year-old and progressed into the round of 64 at this final Grand Slam event of the season.
"I tried to analyse my game, and my game was great from the start to the end," the jubilant Serb was quoted in a post match press conference. "It's also important for me to try to be as economical with the time I spend on the court as possible, but obviously
not underestimating any opponent. I played really focussed, tried to get to the net also. It was great all in all."
The defending champion made a sloppy entry at the Flushing Meadows. However, he made a fitting reply and reeled off the following six games, ultimately pulling out the opener with a breadstick.
Ranked second in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Djokovic maintained his intensity in the follow-up set. He continued hitting powerful shots and wiped out all six games consecutively. The Serb never faced any trouble and capitalised on
three out of five break chances to seal the set with a bagel.
Lorenzi managed to pluck his serve for the first time in the third set. However, the Serb unleashed his skills again and went on a five-game tear. He capitalised on three out of four break opportunities and clinched the set with an assuring 6-1 score line.
Next up for Djokovic is the Brazilian challenger, Rogerio Dutra Da Silva, who battled past the Russian qualifier, Teymuraz Gabashvili, in five set to progress.
