Novak Djokovic goes down against Sam Querrey in the second round – BNP Paribas Masters 2012
Second seed and big time title favourite, Novak Djokovic, suffered a second round upset at the hands of USA’s world number 23, Sam Querrey, at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.
Djokovic humiliated Querrey in the first set by not allowing the American player to win even a single game and then made a good start in the second one but once Querrey came on the score board, he turned it around to win 0-6, 7-6(5),
6-4 in two hours and one minute.
Querrey proved with this epic win that one should not lose hope and kept fighting until the last point. The American player showed brilliant fighting spirit and determination to stun the player, who would be becoming the top ranked
player at the start of next week.
Talking about the proceedings of the match, it was one-way traffic in the first set, as Djokovic struck thrice and grabbed six games in a row to clinch it 6-0.
The Serbian super star made a similar start to the opener in the second set, as he broke Querrey in the first game and consolidated on it to attain a 2-0 lead. At that moment, it looked like another bagel was in the making but
the script turned out to be different. The American contender struck back to level it a 2-2 and then went at par with Djokovic during the rest of the proceedings, levelling it at 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. The Serbian number one took a 3-1 lead but then
Querrey captured six of the following eight points to win 7-6(5).
Querrey carried winning momentum into the decider, hitting a blow to Djokovic in the fifth game and consolidating on it to move ahead 4-2. The American number two did not allow his Serbian rival to make a comeback, beating him
6-4.
When Querrey was asked during the post match press conference that how he felt at 0-2 down in the second set, he replied, “It was a little embarrassing. I walked over to where Casey, my physio/chiropractor sits with my girlfriend
and Casey's wife, and I said, ‘I hope I can get two games in this set.”
The American added, “Once I got the two games I kind of settled down. I was like, ‘Okay, that's all I want.’ But then I got rolling and got more confidence and started serving better and being a little more aggressive.”
Querrey will take on the 14th seed, Milos Raonic of Canada, in the third round.
