Novak Djokovic immediately returns home to visit his ill father – Tennis News
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, ended the dream run of the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, in the final of the Barclays Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Finals on Monday by beating him in straight sets 7-6(6),
7-5 at the indoor hard courts of O2 Arena in London.
It was a memorable moment for the Serb superstar but he wasted little time in celebrating the victory and flew back to his hometown at Belgrade, Serbia to meet his ill father who is suffering from an upper respiratory illness which
is recognized as one of the many lethal diseases.
The 25-year-old Serb was shook by the deteriorating health of his father but managed to stood up and fight for the year-end battle; claimed the trophy with an unbeaten run and came back home with a glory that might revive his father’s
health to some extent.
After dethroning the six-time World Tour Finals Champion, Djokovic stated, “Having my father fighting his own fight for health gave me extra strength that I wanted to play for him in a way. That's one of the reasons I really gave
it all in every match. This was a title for him. At a certain stage, it was very critical. We didn't know what the next day would bring. But now he's much better and he's recovering. He's still in intensive care. I'm going to visit him tomorrow and see how
it goes and try to bring the trophy with me and at least make him smile. I actually feel even more satisfied right now than last year, even though I had an incredible 2011.”
Djokovic gathered three Grand Slam titles in 2011; won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. However, he was able to defend only one of the three Major titles, the Australian Open. It has been a rather bizarre season
for someone who set such high standards in a season prior to this.
Despite some unwanted losses and upsets, the Serb tennis icon registered a glorious end to the season winning three out of four titles; China Open, Shanghai Rolex Masters and the ATP Tour Finals. He missed out on the BNP Paribas
Masters at Paris; fall victim to an opening round upset. The other two titles for Djokovic in 2012 were the Australian Open, the Sony Ericsson Open at Miami and the Rogers Cup at Toronto. Let’s hope his father gets well soon and the boy entertains us in the
new season beginning in January 2013.
