Novak Djokovic is back at his favourite surface – Tennis News
World number two, Novak Djokovic, is back on the hard courts, his favourite surface, after four months. He is also bidding for his first trophy in four months at the Rogers Cup, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Toronto, Canada.
The Serbian top ranked star is excited to be back at his favourite surface and is looking forward to grab some trophies before the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Queens, New York City.
“There are many more tournaments to come and they’re played on my favourite surface, so I will try to use that in my favour and perform my best,” the excited Serb was quoted in a press conference.
The 25-year-old is coming off from clay and grass season. He made title-round appearances at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Internazionali D’Italia and the French Open where he bowed out to the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, in all three tournaments.
In the grass court season, Djokovic secured semi-final berths at the Wimbledon Championships and the London Olympics. Both events occurred at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and Djokovic exited at the hands of the eventual champions. He lost to third seed Roger Federer at the third Grand Slam event and was underplayed by the British top Andy Murray at Games of x*x Olympiad.
“I had great matches in Wimbledon and Olympic Games. Maybe I would wish to go at least a step further on those events, but you can’t always have it all,” reflected the Serbian ace.
The former world number one, Djokovic last held a trophy at the Sony Ericsson Open, a Masters 1000 event held in Miami, where he triumphed over fourth seeded Murray in the final showdown.
The Serb has now returned on hard courts and he is defending his title at the Rogers Cup.
“It’s great to be back in Canada for the Rogers Cup,” Djokovic added further. “I had lots of success in Canada in previous years, and I love coming back here and playing here.”
The Belgrade native is seeded top at the Rexall Centre and will square off against the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, in his opening match.  The Australian teenager battled past the German qualifier, Michael Berrer, in a three set thriller to set up this meeting.
Djokovic will require some time to adjust on the new surface but is geared up for his opening battle.
