Novak Djokovic is bidding to defend his Abu Dhabi title – Tennis News
World number one, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, is looking forward to defend his crown at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships, a tennis exhibition tournament held between six tennis stars in Abu Dhabi.
Djokovic, who will be seeded top at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex, is delighted to end 2012 season ranked number one in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings. He outclassed his entire rivals
to grab the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals title in London few weeks ago.
He is bidding to start the 2013 season in high spirits by grabbing the crown in Abu Dhabi.
“It’s great to end the year back at number one in the world and to get my first ATP World Tour Finals win in London but, after a few weeks’ rest; I’m looking forward to getting the new season off to a winning start again in Abu Dhabi.”
The Serbian ace believes that his success in Abu Dhabi gave him confidence boost for the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Melbourne.
The 25-year-old was quoted further:
“Winning the title here last year’s was the perfect preparation for my victory at the Australian Open in January.”
Last year, the Serbian number one battled past France’s Gael Monfils in a three-set thriller to reach semis.
Djokovic moved up a gear in the final four against the 17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer. He crippled the Swiss Maestro with a breadstick to set-up a final date with fourth seeded David Ferrer.
In the title-round, the Serb maintained his intensity in the final round against the Spanish number two. Djokovic smoothly kept his entire serves and after cashing in several break chances, he sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-1 score line.
“Winning in Abu Dhabi last year was tough, though. I have some very good memories on and off the court from my debut last year.”
Other stars include the Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray, King of Clay Rafael Nadal, Spanish number two David Ferrer, Czech number one Tomas Berdych and world number nine Janko Tipsarevic.
