World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia is named Ace of the Year in the leading http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2011/07/style-upgrade-novak-djokovic.html, after an exceptional 2011 season which saw him lifting ten titles including three Grand Slams. He was enlisted in the GQ’s 2011 Men of the Year exclusive list along with Jay-Z (King of the Year), Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon (Showmen of the Year), and Gary Oldman (Icon of the Year).
After an exceptional season which saw the Serb levelling with John McEnroe with a record of pocketing 42 matches in a row, GQ – a monthly leading men’s magazine which has a readership of 6.6 million readers, named Djokovic Ace of the Year in GQ’s 2011 Men of the Year list.
GQ writes: “The most electrifying thing about watching Djokovic, the quality that pulls in a casual viewer, is that even while playing at the highest level ever attained in his sport, some piece of his mind seems still to be functioning on the normal human plane. He has not turned his back on lesser life-forms, in the manner of a Michael Jordan, and vanished into a rat tunnel of competitive rage. He places another shot improbably—yet certainly—inside the line.”
The Serbian number one started his season confidently at Hopman Cup ATP Exhibition and quickly swiped in all three round robin matches. He then cruised in the Australian Open where he eases past many seeded players including second seeded Roger Federer to set u a date with fifth seeded British Andy Murray in the title round. Djokovic easily tumbled over Murray and grabbed his second Grand Slam title and his first year-to-date title.
His run of form continued in the remaining hard court tournaments and the Serb easily clinched at Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami. Djokovic kept momentum rolling in clay courts and breezed through Belgrade, Madrid and Rome before entering at the second Grand Slam in France. Regardless of losing in the semi-finals to Federer, the Serb levelled John McEnroe consecutive winning record.
The unstoppable Djokovic proved his class in grass as he blasted past everyone including world number one Rafael Nadal to win the Wimbledon Championships, third of the four Grand Slam event.
24-year-old maintained his winning composure in the hard court season again and triumphed at Montreal and at US Open to shelf a total of ten titles in 2011.
