Novak Djokovic is proving he is as good as last year – Tennis Special
All the tennis fans, experts and analysts had one question in their minds at the start of this year, “Can Novak Djokovic dominate this season like he did last year?”
The answer is in positive. Although, Djokovic could not repeat his last year’s unbelievable feat of winning 41 consecutive matches but the Serbian is still the best tennis player on the planet and continues to conquer his opponents
this year.
Though, the world number one has suffered a couple of losses this year, he continues to be head and shoulders above all of his rivals.
Djokovic has carried on his winning streak against his closest rival, Rafael Nadal, but has not face 16-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, yet this year.
He did not face much difficulty in disposing off the fourth member of ‘Big 4”, Andy Murray of Great Britain, in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 in the Sony Ericsson Open final on Sunday to capture back to back titles in Miami.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Djokovic said, "I feel that being number one and having [had] the best year of my career in 2011, I'm playing at the peak of my form and I'm playing the best tennis that I have played."
Djokovic’s last year’s win at the Sony Ericsson Open arrived in the middle of his spectacular 41-match winning streak. He had one of the best starts to a season in the history of the sport, when his triumphing stretch started at
the Australian Open in January and came to an end at the French Open in June. He had won a Grand Slam and four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles during that streak.
In 2012, the right-hander started by defending his title at the Australian Open, as he beat arch rival, Nadal, in the longest Grand Slam final ever. After a couple of semi-final showings at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
and BNP Paribas Open, some tennis experts started to question his confidence. However, he has further proved his consistency by defending his title in Miami last week.
The Serbian added, "The season was incredible, especially the opening five, six months of the year. Every year is different. I'm coming in this year with a grand glam win and now a Miami win, couple of semi-finals. I think I'm
playing equally well as I did 12 months ago."
Djokovic also said that his urge for titles is not over and he tries his best to grab each of them. The Serbian shared that he is not having a negative mindset, as he does not take pressure of defending his titles and points but
tries to give his best at every tournament he participates.
Djokovic will now head to the clay courts of Europe. He will be looking to complete his career Grand Slam by winning the French Open but first he would have to build his confidence by some strong performance at the build up tournaments.
The 24-year-old knows that he had one of the most impressive clay court seasons last year and some big wins against top players on this surface will add to his confidence.
