Novak Djokovic is the chosen one for Serbia’s Olympic Flag Bearer – Tennis News
Number one in the tennis world, Novak Djokovic, will lift the flag of his country at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics taking place in London.
The top Serbian, who is bidding for his fourth straight Grand Slam title at the Roland Garros, is appointed to lift his nation’s flag at the Olympics’ opening ceremony taking place in London.
“We are all very excited about the Olympic games in London, such a magnificent sporting event, and it goes without saying what a great honour it is for me to carry the flag for Serbia,” Djokovic was quoted in an interview to AFP (Agency France Press).
The Serbian ace climbed to the number one spot at the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings after going on a 41-matchkilling spree from the start of the circuit last year. After his streak ended at the French
Open 2011 by Roger Federer, he maintained his intensity and went on to conquer the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open.
The 25-year-old, Djokovic, displayed exceptional skills at the last Summer Olympics event held in Beijing. He captured the bronze medal after ousting the American star, James Blake. The Serb lost to the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal, in the final four.

Currently, Djokovic is displaying top notch performance this season. He has already clicked the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam events, and is one of the hot favourite to conquer Roland Garros. He is eyeing to capture the gold medal at this
upcoming Olympic event and with his current run of form, the Serb can crush anyone who gets in his way to the glory.
In the Beijing Olympics held four years ago, two ATP World Tour stars were flag bearers. The 16-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer of Switzerland, held his nation’s flag and the former world number five, Fernando Gonzalez, was the flag bearer of Chile.
Both veterans displayed superb skills in the tournament and eventually plucked out the medals. The Chilean captured the silver medal in the singles event while Federer teamed up with Stanislas Wawrinka to topple his entire rivals, subsequently clinching the
gold medal.
