Novak Djokovic leads the players’ field at Rogers Cup 2012 – Tennis News
Top seed, Novak Djokovic is amongst the favourite contenders for winning the Rogers Cup held on the hard courts of Toronto, Canada. Being the world number two contender, the Serb received a bye in the first round and will
compete against Australian underdog Bernard Tomic in the second round on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old tennis ace exhibited an unexpected run of form last year with overriding streaks and won three Grand Slam Championships, along with a loss from Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open. In the Olympic
Games 2012, he lost to Juan Martin Del Potro in the bronze medal match. Hence, many critics are sceptical regarding his standing in the Rogers Cup.
In a press conference, he told the media, “Obviously at the start of the season we knew that the transition from grass court to hard court is going to be very difficult, because we have very little time, only few days. Now
we will try to do it in the most efficient, best possible way. How it is going to go, I am not sure. I cannot predict anything else in my opening match. But it will obviously take a little bit of time to do that.”
The players will have to face a sharp transmission from grass to hard courts in the Rogers Cup. Djokovic said that he practised the twice-on Tuesday. However, he claims to be in pressure due to his recent declining graph,
indicating his unsatisfied run of form against the odds.
He further told the media, “Well, it’s hard to expect you can always win every single match that you play in six months. You know, that’s really hard to repeat.”
The 25-year-old Serbian professional will not be facing the leading tennis legends like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, as both of them have withdrawn from the tournament. This clears the field for him to break through his
recent bad patch.
Based on the performance at the London Olympics, the toughest competition is the British number one, Andy Murray. The Scot has won the Rogers Cup in the year 2009 and 2010, demonstrating his strong command on the hard courts.
His incredible confidence after winning his home Olympics will surely give him an edge against Djokovic.
Nonetheless, the Serbian tennis professional will have to face tough path to reach the finals. If he avoids making errors and have faith in his strong streak then he can surely bag home the Rogers Cup 2012!
