Novak Djokovic misses SWE vs. SRB quarterfinal tie in the Davis Cup 2011 – Tennis News
Conqueror of Wimbledon 2011, the one and only; Novak “Djoker” Djokovic was expected to return for his country for the Davis Cup this year against Ervin Elsekovic (world number 355) in the quarterfinal round at Halmstad Arena, Sweden;
however, because of a knee injury was unable to do so. This came as a major disappointment for the spectators and the fans as he had previously missed the opening round of the World Group against India in March as well. Nonetheless, Djokovic was replaced by
Janko Tipsarevic.
Despite the fact Djokovic missed the first round so as to be in top form for the four Masters which were his to take, the presence of top 50 Tipsarevic and Troicki provided a strong front as they annihilated the Indian team registering
a 4-1 score in the tie.
An unstoppable force in 2011, “Djoker” has had 48 wins and 1 loss in 2011. He holds a perfect 5-0 season record against former world number one, Rafael Nadal, beating him in two hard-court finals and two clay-court finals, and
then finally vanquishing the Spaniard in the final at Wimbledon.
Djokovic has shown perseverance with consistency on tour so far this year, especially against the fiercest of all players. Along with a first Grand Slam win against Nadal, he steamrolled Federer three times in the year. His obvious
advantage was none other than momentum.
Tipsarevic currently raking number 29 according to the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings has been playing for Serbia since 2007, before that for FR Yugoslavia (2001 and 2002) and then for Serbia and Montenegro (2003
to 2006).
In 2010 Janko Tipsarevic steered Serbia into their first momentous Davis Cup final after stampeding Radek Stepanek to a 6–0, 7–6(6), 6–4 victory. His last run was at Wimbledon which didn’t go to well for him as he lost his first
set 5-7 and was losing the second as well to Ivo Karlovic but due an injury retired. However, he has shown tremendous improvement during this tour with 26 wins and 14 loses.
Ervin Eleskovic the 24 year old is a Serbian born Swedish player wasn’t much of a challenge for Janko Tipsarevic.
The Serbs were baffled by the news but still went onto playing the match with Janko Tipsarevic’s services against Sweden. Tipsarevic won the first game of the second set after which the Swede retired falling victim to a knee injury
allowing Serbia to take a lead of 2-0 in the quarterfinal.
Following his victory, Tipsarevic tweeted, “It's not the best way to win but Serbia is leading 2:0...One more and we are in the semis...SRBIJA!!!!!” on his Twitter account. Although Team Serbia made it through the first two rubbers,
they expect and hope the reigning world number one will have recovered by Sunday, in time for the reverse singles.
