Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray: who is a better Tennis player?
Tennis is a highly competitive sport and ranking the talent of the top players of the game is a very cumbersome job as they compete with each other with very narrow margins in between. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are both young and very talented players and have made their mark in the professional world of tennis. They are both twenty-three years old and if they stay injury free they can manage to accomplish a lot in their careers as tennis players in the future.
Novak Djokovic is the first professional tennis player from Serbia to have won a Grand Slam singles title. He won at the 2008 Australian Open, which is his first and only Grand Slam win to date. Djokovic is also the youngest player in the Open era to have reached the semi-finals at all four Grand Slam tournaments. He has also reached the final at the 2007 US Open where he was defeated by the number one Swiss tennis player, Roger Federer. Djokovic’s achievements have made him a source of pride for his country plus he is showered with fan mail from people all over the world.
On the other hand there is the British tennis star Andy Murray. Even though Murray has not won any Grand Slam titles as yet, he has reached to two Grand Slam finals at the 2008 US Open and at the 2010 Australian Open. At both occasions he finished as a runner up to Roger Federer. He has also gone as far as the semi-finals at Wimbledon but he has only made it till the quarterfinals at the French Open. He is the highest ranked professional tennis player from Britain since Fred Perry in 1934 and he is the new hope for Britain in the world of tennis.
To ask who is a better player among Djokovic and Murray would not be just, as they are both very capable players. However, Djokovic is one step ahead of Murray in the game as he has been able to bag a Grand Slam title whereas Murray is still waiting for this glorious moment to strike him in his career.
In tennis rankings, the highest both these players have gotten is being world number two. Murray was ranked world number two from 17th August 2009 to 31st August 2009 and currently he has fallen to being world number four. Djokovic is in the lead at the moment as he is currently ranked world number two, making him two spots above that of Murray.
Recently while participating at Wimbledon this year, Djokovic and Murray both made it to the semi-final round, where Murray was up against Rafael Nadal, who went up to becoming the champion at this Grand Slam and Djokovic was up against Tomas Berdych. They both lost to their respective opponents in straight sets at the same point of the tournament that is the semi-final round.
These two have been up against each other a couple of times. When Murray played his first Masters Series in 2008 at the Cincinatti Masters tournament, he was up against Djokovic in the final and managed to overthrow Djokovic 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) to claim the Cincinatti Masters title. They were up against each other once again in 2009 at the Miami Masters, where Murray again defeated Djokovic and became the champion. This makes it more difficult to differentiate between the talents of these two amazing tennis players. As Djokovic may be higher in rankings but Murray has been able to upset Djokovic when they have faced each other on-court.
Murray and Djokovic are both remarkable players who have blessed millions of viewers all over the world with their brilliant performances. Both of them have yet to advance further in their tennis careers and coming to sudden conclusions of who is a better player would not do justice to both these players.
