Novak Djokovic ousts Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open
Current World Number 3 and third seed Novak “Djoker” Djokovic managed to defeat Latvian tennis player Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters Indian Wells. Djokovic closed the match with a victory
in less than an hour.
The Serbian tennis pro played an almost completely flawless game, scoring four aces and committing no double faults in his third round match. He also drove his opponent to break point six times, successfully converting his opportunities
five times.
On the other side of the court, current World Number 34 Gulbis seemed to flounder worse than ever before. He committed five double faults and could not score any aces, in addition to which he was also unable to convert five opportunities
for break points. The 22-year-old player seemed intimidated throughout the match, and Djokovic did not give him any opportunity to break through.
The players have played against each other four times prior to this, with Djokovic setting up an impressive 3-1 head-to-head record. Although Gulbis was able to defeat him once at the 2009 Brisbane International, Djokovic won their
latest match in 2010 at Basel in straight sets. Their head-to-head record is now 4-1 to Djokovic.
The Serbian player has been playing extremely well lately. So far, he has not dropped a single match and has a flawless record of fourteen wins and no losses for the season. As a seeded player, he received a bye in the first round
of the Indian Wells tournament and began his campaign in the second round against Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev. He defeated the player in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 and went on to counter Gulbis, who scored a straight-sets win over Yen-Hsun Lu in his first match.
Now, Djokovic will face either Frenchman Michael Llodra or compatriot Viktor Troicki in the next round of the tournament. Both players are also seeded at the Indian Wells event, and Troicki is expected to emerge from the match
with a victory.
