Novak Djokovic trounces Stanislas Wawrinka to enter quarters – US Open 2012
Defending champion, Novak Djokovic, recorded a 6-4, 6-1, 3-1 retirement victory against the Swiss number two, Stanislas Wawrinka, at the US Open 2012 on Wednesday. After the Swiss was forced to concede, Djokovic secured a spot in the quarter-finals at this
major hard court event taking place in Corona Park, New York City.
The Serbian ace remained on the right path to reclaim his top rank at the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings after overpowering Wawrinka in their 13th meeting. As a result, he improved to an 11-2
record in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against the Swiss.
Djokovic stated in a courtside interview after proceeding into the following round:
"It was really important for me to get the first set under my belt so I could get that mental advantage," said Djokovic. "I think I have done well. In important moments I served well. I felt better and better as the match was going on... It's great that
I haven't spent that much time on the court. I played well, and I'm looking forward to the quarter-finals."
Seeded second in this event, Djokovic thundered into the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He got the desiderated break in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. The Serb then exchanged two serve breaks before closing out the opener with a
6-4 success in 40 minutes.
The world number two perfected his game in the proceeding set. He unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to strike out five games in a row before Wawrinka could hold on. Djokovic plucked his serve once more and sealed the set with a breadstick.
The Serbian number one carried his rhythm in the third set. He jumped to a 3-1 lead after cashing the lone break opportunity in the third game.
However, the Swiss failed to continue his match after that, rewarding Djokovic a spot in the final eight at this major hard court tournament.
Next up for Djokovic is seventh seed Juan Martin Del Potro who triumphed over the former world number one, Andy Roddick, in a four-set thriller to set up this match.
