Novak Djokovic ousts Tommy Haas to reach quarters – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Top seed, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, got the better of the former world number two, Tommy Haas, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Monday.
He summed up a 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 victory against the German veteran to progress into the last eight at this third of the four Grand Slam events held in London, United Kingdom.
The Serbian star warded off late resilience to overpower Haas for the third time this season. After recording this victory, Djokovic extended his lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the 13th seed and reached his 17th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final.
The Belgrade native, Djokovic, commented in a courtside interview after the match. He said, “He's always tough. Coming into this match I knew I had a bad record against him on grass. He's a grass specialist, he has great variety in game, can come to net.
It was a tough challenge for me, but I played a really, really good match.”
With two breaks of serve, Djokovic cruised to a 4-0 lead. After Haas came on the score sheet in the fifth game, the Serb maintained his intensity and pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
The world number one, Djokovic, lost his track towards the following set and suffered the first blow in the fifth game to trail at 2-4. However, he turned the tables on Youzhny after that and reeled off last four games.
Djokovic held his composure in the third set. He exchanged a break and took the set to a tie-breaker. The Serb dominated in it and clinched the set with a 7-6(2) score line.
Next in queue for Djokovic is the Czech top ranked star, Tomas Berdych. The seventh seed conquered the Serb in their only grass court meeting three years ago.
“I lost to him the only time we played on grass back in 2010,” the jubilant Serb reflected about his upcoming battle in a post match presser. “I think that I am playing really, really good tennis at this moment. Maybe even better than 2011, when I won this
tournament. I am confident on the court and trying to maintain this level. I hope I will succeed.”
In addition to this, Berdych clinched his last encounter against the top seed at the Rome Masters. However, Djokovic currently leads the head-to-head series against the Czech by 13-2 and is eyeing to reach semis at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet
Club for third straight year.
