Novak Djokovic outclasses Florian Mayer in opening round – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Top seed, Novak Djokovic, got the better of the German veteran, Florian Mayer, in straight sets at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Tuesday. He recorded a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 score line against the German to progress into the second
round at this Major grass court tournament taking place in London, United Kingdom.
The Serbian top ranked star showed his class at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and overpowered Mayer with ease. As a result, Djokovic improved to 4-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the German
and stayed on track to bid for his second title at this event.
The Serbian ace was quoted in a courtside interview after stealing the match, “For the opening match of my grass-court season, it was a very satisfying performance. Even though I think that I can play better, for the first match
it's normal to expect that you're still kind of finding your rhythm and adjusting to a new surface and new movement. Hopefully I can elevate my game as the tournament goes on. Knowing his quality and knowing that we played in the quarter-finals last year gave
me enough reason to obviously not underestimate him and respect the fact that I needed to be 100 per cent focused from the start and try to have the control of the match.”
Djokovic cruised to a 3-0 lead after drawing the first blood in the second game. He then held his remaining serves with poise and pulled out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The world number one, Djokovic, kept momentum rolling in the following set. The Serb held his entire serves with ease and got the breakthrough in the 11th game, eventually sealing the set by winning seven games to five.
In the third set, the 26-year-old got the coveted break in the opening game and took the initial lead. He then swiftly kept his entire serves and clicked the set with a 6-4 success.
Summing up the Serbian star’s performance, Djokovic clobbered a better first serve ratio of 63 per cent in contrast with the German’s 60 per cent and superbly marked 41 out of 55 points on it. He warded off all three breakpoints
he came across and converted three out of 11 break chances to his advantage.
Next in line for Djokovic is the American qualifier, Bobby Reynolds, who rallied past his wild card compatriot, Steve Johnson, in a five-set nail-biter to set-up this battle.
