Novak Djokovic outplays David Ferrer to clinch the exhibition event in Abu Dhabi – Tennis News
Another trophy was added to the world number one’s showcase of titles on Saturday evening, when Novak Djokovic outplayed the world number five, David Ferrer, in the final of an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi. The Top ranked Serb dispensed out Ferrer in the most assertive manner, finishing the matchup at 6-2, 6-1, to claim the Mubadala World Tennis Championship title on the last day of the year 2011.
The final of the $250,000 winner-takes-all event was played on the hard courts of The Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at the Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with Djokovic facing no real trouble in dumping his opponent. Ferrer utterly failed to pose any serious resistance to the mighty Serb and secured merely three out of 15 games being played in the entire matchup. It was a totally one-sided affair and Djokovic kept with his winning norms to be declared as the champion by the end.
“I must say I'm really happy with the way I'm playing,” said Djokovic. “Playing against the top players in the world in this way gives me a lot of confidence. Usually at this stage, you are trying to find your speed on the court, agility, just dynamics of every stroke. But I found it already, to be honest, right away after the first match.”
The world number one took down 16th ranked Frenchman, Gael Monfils in the quarter-final round of the tournament and then went on to defeat the world number three, Roger Federer, in the semis to earn a title shot in the final. Speculations were made about his physical fitness and form but the Serbian silenced everyone with his belligerent game play to defeat the world number five in the most authoritative fashion.
Ferrer has been in a tremendous form and was victorious against Djokovic in their last meeting at the Barclays ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Finals in London. He disposed of the former world number one, Rafael Nadal, in straight sets in the semi-final clash of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship and was anticipated as the hot favourite in the final. The Spaniard poorly failed to put up a performance up to his high standards and was completely blown away by the Serbian storm.
“I fought, but with Djokovic at the moment, it's difficult to beat him… He was better than me. He played a really good match,” admitted Ferrer at the end.
Nadal and Federer will move on to be a part of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, as the ATP World Tour begins from the coming Monday.
