Novak Djokovic overwhelms Rafael Nadal to clinch fourth Grand Slam title – US Open 2011
Serbian storm kept blazing at Flushing Meadows, as the world number one, Novak Djokovic, continued with his unmatched belligerence to dispose of the second seed Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, in the final of the US Open on Monday.
The final show down of the last Grand Slam tournament of the current year witnessed sheer brilliance of the top seeded Serb for yet another time, as he wrapped up victory in four sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1, to claim his first US
Open title. It was the third Grand Slam championship win for Djokovic in the current ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season and the fourth one in total.
The contest was staged on the glorious Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the world number one disposing off Nadal mercilessly
from the competition. Djokovic appeared in absolute control in the match and apart from the third set tie breaker, the Serbian dominated every minute of the contest.
It was the sixth straight victory for Djokovic over the second ranked Nadal in 2011, defeating the Spaniard in four Master Series finals and two Grand Slam title matches. Djokovic is now running an unbelievable winning record of
64-2 in the current ATP season and has bagged 10 championship titles, which include three Major ones.
“In big matches, the winner is decided by small margins, a couple points,” Djokovic said after clinching the US Open. “I guess the winner is the one who believes in victory more. I’ve had an amazing year, and it keeps going.”
Nadal was completely outplayed in the opening two sets and fell on the back foot right away with a 0-2 deficit in the match. The Spaniard toiled extremely hard to bag the third set in the tie breaker round but was again torn apart
by Djokovic in the fourth set to lose the title he won last year.
“I’m disappointed, but you know what—this guy is doing is unbelievable,” said the Spaniard. Addressing Djokovic, Nadal added: “What you did this year is impossible to repeat, so well done.”
Djokovic has reduced his all-time head-to-head deficit against Nadal by 13-16 and has strengthened his position as the world number one with another Grand Slam victory to his name.
