Novak Djokovic prevails over Sam Querrey through the third round – Rogers Cup 2012
Top seed Serb, Novak Djokovic, disposes the 35th ranked American Sam Querrey by a straight sets win of 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Toronto Masters in Canada on Friday afternoon.
Initially the match was scheduled to be played on Thursday but due to bad weather the match was suspended by two and half hours where the Serbian professional took the lead by 6-4, 4-3.
Querrey was off to a steady start in the opening set and held his initial serve to get settled in the contest. The Serbian had to face a fierce battle in the initial games but eventually tied the scores at 4-4. The world number two then raised the level of his performance, clinching the next two games in a row to bag the first set at 6-4.
In the second set, the Serbian tennis ace picked a slow start and secured a couple of aces with 60 percent serve precision. He was also able to secure a lone break point in the first game to get 2-0 right away. Djokovic was able to maintain the lead in the match as he won all four games consecutively. Querrey could only bag eight of 30 return points and was unable to attain any breakpoint.
Throughout the second set of the match, the American could not breeze past his competitor, remaining lesser competitive than the opener. Both the players have exactly the same second return wins, taking five of 12 points. Djokovic has higher serve points in total, which was the key reason for his ultimate win in the third round.
The Serbian professional surely seems in a good shape to beat all odds in the Rogers Cup 2012. He needs to keep his focus if he intends to regain his lost glory. His defeat at the London Olympics, where he was unable to defend his bronze medal, makes this tournament hold a critical value. In the quarterfinals, he will meet the German, Tommy Haas, who plonked Radek Stepanek by 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
