Novak Djokovic rallies past David Ferrer into the title match – US Open 2012
Second seeded Serbian player, Novak Djokovic, fought back after losing the opener to down the world number five, David Ferrer of Spain, in four sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the semi-finals of the US Open on Sunday.
The match was abandoned on Saturday due to bad weather conditions and it proved ideal for Djokovic, who was finding it quite difficult to cope up with the situation. On the other hand, Ferrer, who plays less aggressively than the
Serbian, adjusted his game very well.
The Spanish number two was leading 5-2 in the first set, when play was suspended on Saturday. As the contest resumed on Sunday, Ferrer did not take much time to close out the opener by holding his serves with ease.
However, Djokovic completely dominated the encounter from that point onwards, as the playing conditions were normal and he could play his aggressive shots without any difficulty. The Serbian star grabbed opening five games of the
second set to race to a 5-0 lead. The fourth seed, Ferrer, avoided humiliation by holding his serve in the sixth to open his account but he failed to reduce the deficit further, losing it 1-6.
Djokovic continued his winning spree, nailing a breakthrough in the very first game of the third set and consolidating on it to attain a 2-0 lead. Ferrer struck back in the fourth to square off the score at 2-2 but the Serbian
contender clinched four of the following five to seal it 6-4.
Ranked second in the world, Djokovic was unstoppable, as he continued to hit blistering winners from all corners of the court. The Serbian hit blows to Ferrer in the first and third game of the fourth set to build a 4-0 advantage.
The 25-year-old maintained his lead till the end to claim it 6-2.
Talking to the newsmen at the end of the match, Djokovic accepted that he could not play properly due to extreme windy conditions on Saturday. He said, "It's a great relief obviously to get it over with in four sets. As well I
was a different player. I felt much more comfortable on the court today than I did yesterday. Obviously the conditions were more brutal for all of us who played yesterday... Ferrer was I think coping with the conditions much better than I did. He was handling
it great. I didn't find any rhythm, so I didn't mind getting off the court yesterday, to be honest, and coming in today."
The defending champion is aiming to win his second US Open and overall sixth Grand Slam title. The Serbian defeated the then world number two Rafael Nadal in last year’s final here.
Djokovic will take on the third seed, Andy Murray of Great Britain, in the final on Monday.
