Novak Djokovic retains the Rogers Cup title at Toronto – Tennis News
World number two, Novak Djokovic, succeeded in completing a mission at Toronto by holding on to his title after several back and forth withdrawals from the top seeds from the tournament. He was the only competitor from the Top-5
slots in the world rankings, courtesy to a fatigue break for the reigning Wimbledon Champion, Roger Federer, a chronic knee injury issue of the Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal, and the late injury withdrawal from the reigning Olympics gold medallist, Andy
Murray. He was bound to win the title; didn’t have any other choice but to save some glorious moments in Canada.
He ousted the 14th seed French superstar, Richard Gasquet, in the final showdown on the eve of Sunday. It was a one-sided contest for the Serb superstar who ended the resistance of his rival in just 62 minutes; registering
straight sets 6-3, 6-3 victory to retain the title. Now, Djokovic has won the Rogers Cup title for three times.
Six years ago, Gasquet was seen in the finals of the same event against the reigning world number one, Roger Federer. He was the second best on that occurrence and despite a hard fought struggle throughout the tournament; the luck
didn’t change for him in the final showdown.
The 25-year-old Serb superstar commented on his triumph, "I truly did not expect myself to win this tournament after the emotional losses in the Olympic Games. I really took it hard. I tried to bounce back and recover. I've done
great, I have to say. I'm not one of the biggest servers in the game, that's for sure, but I always try to focus on the second shot after the serve. I've been working on the efficiency of my first and second serve, but also trying to be aggressive in the first
ball. It's been working exceptionally well throughout the whole week."
Next up for the Serbian is the tournament in Cincinnati; the Western and Southern Open. World number one, Roger Federer, will be back in action but the likes of the Rafael Nadal is still sidelined for the same knee issue. Nothing
is sure about Andy Murray.
