Novak Djokovic sets sight at defending his title in Indian Wells – Tennis News
Serbian world number one, Novak Djokovic, is taking things as they come to him. He is not thinking big at the moment, although, he will fight until the last breath to defend his title in Indian Wells in the coming days.
Talking about his last year performance and this year aims, he stated, “Last year was amazing, definitely the best year of my career. If you ask me if I can repeat it, I don't know. It's going to be very, very hard obviously. It's a new year for me. I look forward to Indian Wells. Events coming up are really important and I need to get ready.” He was pointing towards his title defence in California that starts on Thursday. The tournament will be played on hard courts and features the prize money of $US 11 million. It’s a joint event so both, men and women, will contest simultaneously.
Djokovic is in the hunt to perform the heroics of winning four Grand Slam titles in a row by winning the Roland Garros French Open in June. It will be a monumental task for him to dethrone the king of clay, Rafael Nadal and win the title but anything can happen in the world of tennis.
Currently, he is concentrating on Indian Wells and has a big task to see off his arch rivals to sustain his title. Nadal won the title in California in successive years in 2007 and 2008. He already played a six-hour marathon grand finale of the Australian Open earlier in January. However, he lost it but still he was as good as Djokovic. It was just a matter of luck at the end.
Tennis icon, Roger Federer, has also set his sight on the third consecutive title of the year. He has already won the ABN AMRO title in Rotterdam and was recently crowned champion in Dubai. He is on a 10-match winning streak and has lost just three matches with 18 victories to his name in 2012.
Number one Briton, Andy Murray, is also a strong contender for the title. He has been in supreme form and has already defeated the reigning champion of Indian Wells, Djokovic, in the semi-final of the Dubai Duty Free Championships before losing it out to the five-time champion, Federer.
The stage is set for a gruelling as well as enthralling show in California with players hungry to win the majestic title.
