Novak Djokovic slays Sam Querrey to enter quarters – BNP Paribas Open 2013
World number one, Novak Djokovic, raced past the local star, Sam Querrey, with a bagel at the BNP Paribas Open 2013 on Thursday. He recorded a 6-0, 7-6(6) victory against the 23rd seed to power into the final eight at
this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Indian Wells, United States.
Seeded top in this hard court tournament, Djokovic warded off having a déjà Vu experience. In his last encounter against Querrey, the Serb lost in the tie-breaker of the second set and eventually crashed out at the BNP Paribas
Masters. However, he managed to keep the upper hand at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and extended his lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against his fellow 25-year-old.
“It was very similar to Bercy. I had a few unforced errors and he started to play better. That’s why he came back,” said the jubilant Serb. “But I felt throughout the whole match, I had control and was moving and hitting well,
so I’m very happy with the performance.”
The six-time Grand Slam champion, Djokovic thundered into this match. He went on a six-game killing spree and pulled out the opener with a bagel.
The Belgrade native, Djokovic maintained consistency in his game in the proceeding set. He cashed a break opportunity in the fifth game and jumped to a 3-2 lead. Despite levelling the game in the very next game, the Serb dragged
the set to a tie-breaker. He prevailed in it and eventually clinched the set with a 7-6(6) score line.
Next in queue for Djokovic is the eighth seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals.
The world number three, Andy Murray will accompany Djokovic in the proceeding round. He eased past Carlos Berlocq in straight sets to progress.
The reigning US Open champion reflected after bagging the match:
"It was tough. He started well and he was playing very aggressive. He had a lot of chances in the first set. He obviously served for it. And then the second set was kind of the other way around. I had a lot of chances, but it
was still tight."
The Dunblane native will face off seventh seeded Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina.
