Novak Djokovic steals the show for Serbia – Davis Cup 2013
World number one, Novak Djokovic, outshined Sam Querrey in a four-set thriller at the Davis Cup 2013 on Sunday. As a result, he booked a semi-final spot for his nation and earned the glory.
The Serbian topped ranked star warded off early resistance to outclass Querrey in their seventh encounter. After recording a 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-0 victory, Djokovic improved to a 6-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2
Head series against his fellow 25-year-old.
“I am happy I managed to play the whole match,” said the Serb after winning the rubber against the American challenger in a courtside interview. “I played really well in the third and fourth sets. I am sorry for team USA but it was a thrilling weekend for
all of us.”
Djokovic made a strong start at this indoor hard court match. He drew the first blood in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. The Serb lost his edge in the sixth game but remained focused after that. He got the breakthrough in the second last game and
eventually clicked the opener with a 7-5 win.
Ranked 20th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey re-focused in the proceeding set. He smoothly swiped his entire serves but failed to get the breakthrough. However, the American edged past Djokovic in the tie-breaker and eventually
clinched the set with a 7-6(4) score line.
The Belgrade native went berserk after this. He got the coveted break in the second game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. After the American held his serve in the fourth game, Djokovic wiped out last three games and sealed the set with a breadstick.
Djokovic maintained his intensity in the fourth set. He went on a six-game killing spree and subsequently bagged a bagel.
With this victory, Serbia notched a 3-1 victory over United States of America and progressed into the last four.
Elsewhere, Milos Raonic became star for his nation. He recorded a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory in two hours and 24 minutes against the Italy’s Andreas Seppi. As a result, Canada jolted down a 3-1 victory against Italy.
