Novak Djokovic strains past David Ferrer in the last four – Australian Open 2012
World number one, Novak Djokovic, cruised into the semi-finals of the Australian open tournament after a straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-1 triumph against the Spanish number two, David Ferrer, on Wednesday. The score doesn’t do justice
to the Spaniard as he put up a world class fight only to see himself losing in straight sets.
The two men faced each other on 12 different occasions before this match and the head-to-head scores were shared in the ratio of 7-5 in favour of the Serb. Anything could have happened as Ferrer is a true fighter and he proved
it at the courts of Rod Laver Arena. The score line was cruel for the talented Spaniard as he deserved better than that. Second set was separated with a difference of just one point and that sums up the bad luck that Ferrer had on Wednesday.
First set scores were closely tied throughout the opening four games. Djokovic changed his technique slightly to play from the edge of the court instead of improvising and advancing to the net. His strategy paid off and he broke
his opponent’s serve to take the vital lead that lasted until the conclusion of the set. Spaniard fought hard to win back the break but his efforts were just not good enough to earn him the breakthrough.
Second set started with a successful break point conversion from the Serb as he pressed for an initial lead. Her aggression backfired at him in the fourth game when Ferrer broke his serve to level the scores at 2-2. The two players
exchanged breakpoints in the eleventh and twelfth game, enforcing a tie-breaker round to decide the set. After taking an initial lead, Ferrer wasted a number of crucial opportunities that cost him another set.
Losing the second set after such a hard-fought battle, Ferrer gave up and played with a lost heart. The Serb broke twice in the third set and spared just a single game for the warrior of the field of tennis to win the set. It was
a great battle and Djokovic moves ahead to face the Briton number one, Andy Murray, in the semi-finals.
