Novak Djokovic survives against Bernand Tomic in quarterfinal – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Serbian ace Novak “Djoker” Djokovic survived a second set lapse against young Aussie Bernard Tomic in their quarterfinal match at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships in London, England on Wednesday, 29th June. The Serb
took almost three hours to secure a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory against the Australian.
Winning the toss the young Aussie elected to serve first. Despite his serve, Tomic had to toil long and hard enduring long rallies to keep up with the hard hitting Serb. Although he managed to push the game to several (four) deuces,
he failed to hold his serve as Djokovic sent a deadly combination of forehand and backhand to clinch a serve break. Without much effort, Djokovic bagged his first service game to lead the opener 2-0.
Extending his lead to 4-2, Djokovic was once more able to clinch a lucky break setting himself to serve out the set at 5-2. Losing no point in the final game with an ace at 40-0, Djoker sealed a 6-2 win in the first set.
A bit longer than usual with the expected outcome, Djokovic capitalised on Tomic’s nine unforced errors, as he hit five aces and twelve winners, registering near perfect 92 percent and 80 percent wins on first and second serve
respectively. The Serb took a little over half hour to go one up in the set score.
The second set took an unexpected turn as Tomic, having apparently found his footing, capitalised on Djoker’s double fault to clinch a lucky break and extend his lead to 4-1 in the set. Riding the one lucky break he had, Tomic
turned the tables as he clinched a 6-3 win levelling the set score to one set each.
Maintaining his form in the third set, Tomic started with a break in the very first game as he forced error upon error from Djokovic. A successful hold of serve later, Tomic secured a 2-0 lead in the set. However, a break in the
sixth game allowed Djokovic to level the score at three games each before holding his own serve to lead 4-3. Another break later, Djokovic led the set 5-3 before serving out the set in the ninth game to clinch a 6-3 victory and once more lead the set score.
Recovered from his second set lapse, Djokovic was once more the dominant player as he capitalised on an early break in the fourth set to secure a 2-0 lead. However, a double fault from Djoker in the fourth game gave Tomic the break
he needed as he brought the score to two games each.  The scoreboard continued to tick on even terms for the next six games. It was only in the eleventh game, that Djokovic forced a vital error from Tomic as he clinched a break to go 6-5 in the set. Losing
only one point in the final game, Djokovic was able to serve out the set, securing a 7-5 win for himself.
Djokovic moves on ahead to play either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Swiss maestro Roger Federer in the semi-finals.
