Novak Djokovic takes down Marcos Baghdatis to reach the fourth round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Serbian wind blew away the 30th ranked Cyprian, Marcos Baghdatis, as the second seed Novak Djokovic defeated him in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships, at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon,
London, England on Saturday afternoon.
The world number two took three hours and fifteen minutes to take down Baghdatis in the fourth set of the contest, settling the final scores at 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to make it to the pre-quarter-final round of the third Grand Slam
tournament of the year.
After a steady start to the contest, Djokovic gradually gathered up his pace to dispose of the Cyprian in the fourth set. He took the opening set after a stiff contest but dropped the following set to let Baghdatis back in the
game. However, the 32nd seed failed to sustain his momentum in the later parts of the game and submitted the next two sets to Djokovic, giving him a place in the fourth round of Wimbledon.
It was the fifth consecutive victory Djokovic registered against Baghdatis, while the Cyprian has never defeated him in singles matchup. The last time these two men met was at Dubai last year, with Djokovic winning 6-7(2), 6-3,
6-4, in the semi-final of the event.
The Serbian serve lacked something to be desired, as Djokovic delivered just 66 per cent of his first serve on target but he reeled off 60 out of 80 points on it. His 10 aces were replied with 14 from Baghdatis, who belted 40 winners
in the game, two more than Djokovic did.
The second seed coughed 33 unforced errors in the game but kept his knack of winning crucial points in the contest to come out as the winner in the end. Djokovic’s agility in the match was worth appreciation, as he was able to
track a number of occasional drop shots from the opponent, converting them into elegant cross-court winners.
Baghdatis hung in the opening set, holding serve in all his game before Djokovic finally broke him in the 10th game to seal the first set at 6-4. The Cyprian registered his first serve break of the match to clinch the
second set at 6-4 but the Serb bounced back forcefully in the next two sets to conclude a comprehensive victory.
Up next for Djokovic is the 19th seed Frenchman, Michael Llodra, who defeated Lu Yen-hsun in the third round to meet the second seed for a place in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
