Novak Djokovic thrashes Florian Mayer to reach the last four – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Defending champion, Novak Djokovic, continued his bid to repeat his last year’s heroics, as he breezed past Germany’s Florian Mayer in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday.
It took the Serbian star just an hour and 45 minutes to undo his opponent in a one sided encounter.
Djokovic and Mayer captured their serves in the opening four games to even out the score at 2-2. They exchanged a break in the following two, taking the proceedings to 3-3. Mayer created a couple of break chances at 4-4 but Djokovic
saved both of them and went on to hold his serve. Serving to stay in the set at 4-5, the German was up 40-15 but squandered both game points and lost it in the end, going down 4-6.
In the second set, Djokovic and Mayer began by holding their opening serves and levelling the score at 1-1. The world number one completely dominated the proceedings after that, as he did not allow the German to claim any game,
breaking him twice and consolidating on both of them to grab it 6-1.
In contrast to the first two sets, the third one was started in a steady manner by both players, as they went neck to neck in the first eight games, squaring off the score at 4-4. However, Mayer failed to claim even a single point
when he served in the ninth and wasted three break points in the next one to lose it 4-6.
Mayer was bidding to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Talking to the reporters after the match, he said, "After the first set, he played unbelievable, especially in the second set. He showed
why he's the best player right now in the world. He left me no chance in the second set. If I could have won the first set, maybe I would have had a small chance. But still it's very, very tough to beat him."
Djokovic will take on the six-time former champion, Roger Federer, in the semi-finals.
The Serbian commented, "It is a challenge when you play Roger and Rafa or any of the top players. Roger has been on the top of the men's game for so long. This is where he won six titles. He definitely wants to prove himself and
to everybody else that he can win it once again.”
Djokovic will meet Federer for the 27th time in his career, trailing 12-14 in the head-to-head series.
