Novak Djokovic to get Centrepoint award in recognition of his charity work – Tennis News
Centrepoint has announced that it will present a special award to the reigning world number one tennis player, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, for his contribution in motivating youth to work for the underprivileged.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge, who is the patron of this charity organisation will present the award to the Serbian star at the Winter Whites Gala in London’s Royal Albert Hall on 8th December.
This is for the first time that such an award is being presented to anyone by Centrepoint. This charity organisation was founded by its present Trustee, Danielle Alexandra, and the CEO, Seyi Obakin. Centrepoint’s motive is to honour
those individuals, who inspire the youth to help in eradicating sufferings of the mankind like hunger, health, education, homelessness and poverty.
Djokovic, who is an ambassador of UNICEF, contributed a lot in raising $1.4 million for his Foundation, which is known as The Novak Djokovic Foundation, through its first fundraising diner in September. The five-time Grand Slam
champion paid a visit to Beneath the Linden Trees kindergarten, which is an initiative of UNICEF that raises awareness of early childhood education in Serbia.
The reigning world number one was extremely happy when he got to know that he would get the Centrepoint award. He said, “This is one of the biggest awards I could ever receive because it recognises the contribution of my Foundation
to the lives of young people around the world, which is a big part of our work. Centrepoint is a charity which is dedicated to ending youth homelessness and it will be an honour to receive this award from the charity’s patron, HRH The Duke of Cambridge.”
Djokovic and his apparel sponsor, UNIQLO, have also launched a project by the name of Clothes for Smiles. That program has established a fund of $10 million to help children around the world to fulfil their dreams.
The Serbian star is continuing his charity commitments with his tough schedule on the ATP World Tour. The 25-year-old defeated Roger Federer in the title match of Barclays ATP World Tour Finals and ended the season as top ranked
player second year in a row.
