Novak Djokovic topples Andy Murray in Group A – Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2012
World number one, Novak Djokovic, made a heroic comeback to outlast the Olympic gold medallist, Andy Murray from Great Britain, in a three-set mouth-watering match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2012 on Wednesday. He notched up a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory
against his fellow 25-year-old to maintain his unbeaten record in Group A at this season-ending tournament taking place in London, England.
The top seed stayed on track to capture his second ATP World Tour Finals title after clinching this marathon three-setter. Battling each other for the 17th time, the Serb improved to a 10-7 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Head 2 Head Series against the Dunblane native.
Djokovic stated in a courtside interview after conquering the Brit:
“It was important for me after dropping a first set to stay mentally tough and believe that I could get my opportunities, and when they were presented to try to step in and use them. I don't think I played bad in the first set. It was him playing really
well, serving extremely well. He lost only [a] couple of points on his first serve throughout the whole set and then he made some unforced errors. He allowed me to get back to the match. Then I think it was quite even up to the last point."
Ranked third in the world, Murray stormed into The O2 Arena. He broke Djokovic’s opening serve and took the initial lead. The Scot then held his composure and swiped his entire serves with poise. He was never challenged with any barrier and cashed one out
of two break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The Serbian top ranked star sought his momentum in the proceeding set. He got the coveted break in the sixth game and jumped to a 5-2 lead. Djokovic plucked his serve once again and clicked the equaliser with a 6-3 win. He dusted away the only breakpoint
he came across and cashed the lone break chance to get back in contention.
The match was standing on a knife edge but Djokovic carried his rhythm and stayed focused. He got the critical break in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. Despite levelling the scores in the eighth game, the Serb got the breakthrough in the 11th
game and bagged the decider with a 7-5 success.
Djokovic will face off fifth seeded Tomas Berdych in his third round robin match.
