Novak Djokovic topples Ryan Harrison in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Defending champion, Novak Djokovic, put to an end a spirited show by his American opponent, Ryan Harrison, as he knocked out the latter in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 64 of the Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday.
The Serbian, who is the highest ranked player on the ATP World Tour at the moment, took only an hour and 56 minutes to throw the world number 48 out of the competition.
Djokovic and Harrison started the encounter is a stable manner, as they did not lose serve in the first four games to even out the proceedings at 2-2. The Serbian struck at that moment and held his following serve to grab a 4-2
lead. Serving for the set at 5-4, Djokovic dropped only one point and sealed it 6-4.
In the second set, Harrison got so many chances to draw the first blood but he wasted six break points in the sixth game, levelling the proceedings at 3-3. The American was a bit disappointed because of squandering those chances,
as he lost his serve in the very next game. The American contestant was able to win only one more and lost the second set 4-6.
Harrison went on equal terms with Djokovic in the opening eight games of the third set, taking the score to 4-4. However, the top seeded player, Djokovic, claimed the decisive breakthrough in the ninth and capitalised on it to
triumph 6-4.
The Serbian said, during the post match press conference, "I thought he played really well. He had his chances in the second set. But other than that game I thought I served really well. I was winning comfortably [in] my service
games, which is [an] encouraging fact for the next rounds."
Djokovic and Harrison’s match was delayed due to some rain earlier in the day and they had to play under the closed roof. The Serbian was happy, as he shared, "It was great to be under the roof once again. I thought it was a very
exciting match to be a part of as a player, and I thought the crowd enjoyed it as well. He had a high percentage of first [serves and was] very efficient. It was a little bit of a different condition. Under the roof when you're playing, it's a bit more humid.”
The Belgrade, Serbia resident fulfilled his childhood’s double dream at this very grass of the All England Club last year, as he snatched Rafael Nadal’s Wimbledon title and top ranking by beating him in the final here.
Djokovic will play either Germany’s Benjamin Becker or the 28th seed, Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic, in the round of 32.
