Novak Djokovic tops Tomas Berdych in his final round robin match – ATP World Tour Finals 2012
Reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, maintained his perfect record in the Group stage by beating the fifth seed, Tomas Berdych, in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(6) in his final round robin match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
in London.
The Serbian super star needed one hour and 37 minutes to post this win over his Czech rival.
Berdych made a good start, as he held his opening serve convincingly to attain a 1-0 lead. However, when Djokovic started his express, he became almost unstoppable, grabbing five games in a row to race to a 5-1 advantage. Berdych
managed to win one more game to reduce the trail to 2-5 but Djokovic closed it out at that moment, winning 6-2.
In the second set, the Serbian player struck in the third game to take a 2-1 lead but Berdych broke back immediately to even out the proceedings at 2-2. The next eight went with serves, levelling the score at 6-6 and forcing a
tie-breaker. The Czech number one grabbed a 5-1 lead and had three set points at 6-3 but lost five successive points later on to go down 6-7(6).
Djokovic, who has already ensured that he would end the season as world number one, has grabbed his 11th win in 12 meetings over Berdych.
Talking to the reporters after the match, the Serbian said, “I played a lot of matches this year, but for the first time I won all three in my group. This is very encouraging for me, so I will try to focus on the semi-final now.
I just try to have a simple thinking, fight every point that I have. Guess it works sometimes. Sometimes it doesn't work. I'm glad it worked today.”
On the other hand, Berdych said about the second set, “It was quite close set. I had some chances in the tie-break. It wasn't one of my best matches with him. I hope that the best moment is still to come.”
Djokovic’s opponent in the semi-finals is not confirm yet and would be decided after final two round robin clashes in the Group B on Saturday.
